Nashville Hot Honey Chicken Bowl (30 Minutes, High-Protein, Athlete Approved)
After-practice nights are no joke in my house.
Everyone walks through the door at the same time, bags hitting the floor, shoes everywhere, and every single person asking what is for dinner before they are even fully inside. I need something that is fast, filling, and actually good enough that nobody is opening the fridge looking for something else ten minutes later.

This Nashville Hot Honey Chicken Bowl is that dinner.
Crispy hot-honey chicken over jasmine rice with a creamy fresh-garlic dill yogurt sauce and a quick coleslaw that comes together while the chicken cooks. Thirty minutes start to finish. The whole family eats it. My athletes get the protein and carbs they need after a hard practice, and everyone else at the table is happy too.
The hot-honey finish on the chicken is what makes this recipe. You cook the chicken until it is crispy, lower the heat, drizzle in honey and hot sauce, and let it caramelize for just a couple of minutes. That sticky sweet-heat coating on every piece of chicken is what has my family asking for this on repeat.
Make the yogurt sauce first. It gets better as it sits, and it is what ties the whole bowl together.
WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS
Ready in 30 minutes start to finish. High-protein and perfect for athletes and active families. The whole family eats it every single time. Crispy sweet-heat chicken that caramelizes in the pan. Creamy fresh-garlic dill yogurt sauce that makes the whole bowl. Quick coleslaw that comes together in minutes. Naturally gluten-free. Great for meal prep — store components separately and assemble all week

INGREDIENTS
For the chicken: 3 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs, diced small 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp onion powder 2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to your heat preference) 1 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper 3 tbsp honey 1 tbsp hot sauce (Franks or your favorite)

For the creamy fresh-garlic dill yogurt sauce: 2/3 cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt 1/3 cup light sour cream 1 fresh clove of garlic, finely grated 3 tbsp fresh chopped dill 2 tbsp fresh chopped chives 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice Salt, pepper to taste

For the coleslaw: 3 cups shredded green cabbage 2 cups shredded purple cabbage 1/2 cup mayo 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp honey Salt and pepper to taste

For the bowl: 3 cups cooked jasmine rice, pickles, pickled red onions. Fresh chives for garnish
A note on the chicken: Boneless skinless chicken thighs are the move here. They stay juicy and get crispier than chicken breast. Dicing them small means every single piece gets that hot-honey crust. Do not skip the small dice.
A note on the yogurt sauce: Grating the fresh garlic clove directly into the sauce instead of using garlic powder completely changes the flavor. It is sharper, brighter, and so much more alive. Make this first and let it sit in the fridge while everything else comes together. It gets better every minute it sits.
A note on the heat: One teaspoon of cayenne gives you a medium heat level. Pull it back to half a teaspoon for mild. Push it to one and a half for real heat. Adjust to your family.
HOW TO MAKE THE NASHVILLE HOT HONEY CHICKEN BOWL
Step 1 — Make the yogurt sauce first
In a bowl combine Greek yogurt, sour cream, and finely grated fresh garlic. Add the chopped dill, chopped chives, and fresh lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir until completely smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. This gets better as it sits so make it first every single time.
Step 2 — Make the coleslaw
Toss the shredded green and purple cabbage together in a large bowl. In a separate small bowl, whisk together mayo, apple cider vinegar, honey, salt and pepper. Pour over the cabbage and toss until fully coated. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Step 3 — Season the chicken
Pat your diced chicken thighs dry with paper towels. This is important. Dry chicken gets crispy. Wet chicken steams. Toss the chicken with olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne, salt, and black pepper until every single piece is fully coated.
Step 4 — Cook the chicken
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken in a single layer and do not touch it for 4 to 5 minutes. This is how you build the crust. Resist the urge to move it. Toss and continue cooking for another 4 to 5 minutes until every piece is crispy and cooked through to 165 degrees F. Work in batches if your pan is not large enough. Crowding the pan means steaming, not searing.
Step 5 — The hot-honey finish
Lower the heat. Drizzle the honey over the crispy chicken, followed by the hot sauce. Toss everything together to coat every piece. Let it caramelize in the pan for 1 to 2 minutes. Watch it. It goes from perfect to burnt quickly. This is the moment that makes the whole dish. The glossy, sticky sweet-heat coating on every piece of chicken is everything.
Step 6 — Build your bowl
Rice on the bottom. Hot-honey chicken piled on top. Coleslaw to the side. Drizzle the yogurt sauce generously over everything. Add pickles and pickled red onions. Finish with fresh chives. Eat immediately.

TIPS FOR THE BEST NASHVILLE HOT HONEY CHICKEN BOWL
Make the yogurt sauce first. Every time. It needs time to sit, and the flavor develops as it rests. Fresh-grated garlic is non-negotiable here. It makes the sauce taste alive in a way garlic powder never could.
Pat the chicken dry before seasoning. Moisture is the enemy of a crispy crust. Paper towels, both sides, every piece.
Do not touch the chicken for the first 4 to 5 minutes. I know it is hard. Leave it alone. That is how you get the crust.
Work in batches if you need to. One layer at a time. Crowding the pan traps steam and you lose the crisp.
Watch the hot-honey finish closely. Once the honey and hot sauce hit the pan, it caramelizes fast. One to two minutes maximum then get it off the heat.
Dice the chicken small. Small pieces mean more surface area, more crust, more hot-honey coating on every single bite.

Keep components separate if you are meal prepping. Store the chicken, rice, coleslaw, and sauce in separate containers. Assemble fresh each day. Keeps perfectly in the fridge for up to 4 days.
VARIATIONS
Make it milder. Pull the cayenne back to 1/4 teaspoon for a family-friendly heat level that still has flavor without the burn.
Make it spicier. Push the cayenne to 1.5 teaspoons and add an extra splash of hot sauce in the finish. For the heat lovers in your house.
Swap the rice. Brown rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice all work great as the base. Jasmine rice is my personal favorite for the flavor and texture.
Add avocado. A few slices of fresh avocado on top add creaminess that pairs beautifully with the hot-honey chicken.
Skip the coleslaw. If you are short on time just serve it with rice and the yogurt sauce. It is still incredible without the slaw.
Make it a wrap. Pile everything into a large flour tortilla and wrap it up. My kids eat it this way constantly.
HOW TO STORE AND MEAL PREP
Store components separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. The chicken, rice, coleslaw, and yogurt sauce all store beautifully on their own. Assemble fresh each time you eat.
Reheat chicken: skillet over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until warmed through and re-crisped. Microwave works too but the skillet keeps it crispy.
Reheat rice: microwave with a splash of water, covered, for 60 to 90 seconds.
The yogurt sauce keeps in the fridge for up to 4 days and gets better every day.
The coleslaw keeps for up to 3 days. It will soften slightly as it sits but still tastes great.
FAQ
You can but I do not recommend it for this recipe. Chicken thighs stay juicy and get crispier than breast meat. Breast meat can dry out quickly with the high heat needed for a good sear. If you use breast meat, pull it at 160 degrees F and do not overcook it.
Yes. Pull the cayenne all the way back to 1/4 teaspoon or omit it entirely. The hot sauce in the finish adds mild heat that most kids can handle. You can also serve the hot sauce on the side so everyone controls their own heat level.
I use Franks RedHot. It has the right balance of heat and vinegar for this recipe. Crystal, Tabasco, or any vinegar-based hot sauce works well. Avoid thick sweet hot sauces like Sriracha here.
Yes. This is one of my favorite meal prep recipes. Cook everything on Sunday, store components separately, and assemble fresh throughout the week. The flavors actually get better as everything sits.
Absolutely. A bag of pre-shredded coleslaw mix from the store saves time and works perfectly. Just add the dressing and you are done in two minutes.
Yes. Grill the seasoned chicken over medium-high heat until cooked through, then toss with the hot-honey glaze right at the end. Incredible on the grill in the summer.
Yes. The base recipe is completely gluten-free. Check your hot sauce label to confirm it is also gluten-free.
Approximately 45 to 50 grams of protein per serving depending on your portion of chicken. Full nutrition information is in the recipe card below.
Yes. The cooked hot-honey chicken freezes well for up to 3 months. Freeze without the rice and coleslaw. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in a skillet.
