Blackberry St. Germain Halloween Smash (Spooky, Stunning, No Food Coloring)
I have made a lot of Halloween cocktails over the years. This one stopped everyone in the room.

The moment I set this down on the counter my family went silent for a second. The dry ice fog was rolling over the black sugar rim of the skull glass. Fresh blackberries piled on top. Purple and orange spiders scattered around. A skeleton hand stirrer rising out of the deep purple mist. It looked like something straight out of a haunted bar and it took me 10 minutes to make.
Here is what makes this cocktail different from every other Halloween drink you have seen. There is zero food coloring anywhere in this recipe. That deep almost black purple color comes entirely from fresh blackberries muddled right in the shaker. The St. Germain elderflower liqueur adds a delicate floral sweetness that makes the blackberry flavor taste more complex and sophisticated than anything you would expect from a Halloween cocktail. And the 818 Tequila Reposado adds a rich slightly smoky depth that ties everything together.
This is a grown up Halloween cocktail that actually tastes incredible. Not just looks incredible. Both.
The dry ice effect is optional but I am going to tell you exactly how to do it safely because when that fog starts rolling over the rim of a skull glass something magical happens and everyone wants to film it.
Make this for your Halloween party. Make it for a girls night. Make it for yourself on a Tuesday in October because you have four kids and you deserve it. Whatever the occasion this cocktail is going to make people talk.

HOW TO MAKE THE BLACKBERRY ST. GERMAIN HALLOWEEN SMASH
Step 1 — Rim your skull glass with black sugar Run a lemon wedge slowly around the entire rim of your skull glass. Dip the rim into black sugar rotating until every inch is coated. Set aside. This is your first filming moment. That black sugar rim against the skull glass is stunning on camera.
Step 2 — Muddle the blackberries and mint Add fresh blackberries and fresh mint leaves to your cocktail shaker. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon press firmly and repeatedly until the blackberries are completely broken down and all the juice is released. The color in your shaker at this point will be a deep dramatic purple. This is your natural food coloring. No artificial dyes needed anywhere in this recipe.
Step 3 — Add the spirits and shake Add 818 Tequila Reposado, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker. Fill with ice. Seal and shake vigorously for a full 15 seconds. The longer you shake the colder and more frothy the cocktail becomes.
Step 4 — Double strain into your skull glass Place a fine mesh strainer over your skull glass. Strain the cocktail through it pressing the blackberry pulp gently to extract every last drop of that beautiful purple juice. The double straining removes all seeds and pulp leaving you with a silky smooth deep purple cocktail. Fill the glass with fresh ice before straining if you want it over ice.
Step 5 — Add the dry ice safely If using dry ice read the safety notes below first. Use tongs to place a very small piece of food grade dry ice into the glass. Place your dry ice strainer over the top immediately. The fog will begin rolling over the rim within seconds. This effect lasts 3 to 5 minutes and looks absolutely incredible on camera. Film this moment. It is your hero shot.
Step 6 — Top with sparkling water Add a small splash of sparkling water to the top of the cocktail. This lightens the texture slightly and adds a gentle fizz.
Step 7 — Garnish and serve immediately Add fresh blackberries to the rim or drop them into the drink. Add a fresh mint sprig. Place a dried lemon or lime wheel on the rim. Add your Halloween spider decorations and skeleton hand stirrer. Serve immediately and watch everyones reaction.
DRY ICE SAFETY — READ THIS BEFORE YOU USE IT
Dry ice is incredibly fun for Halloween cocktails but it must be handled safely. Here is everything you need to know:
Always use food grade dry ice only. This is specifically manufactured for use with food and beverages. Regular dry ice may contain impurities.
Never touch dry ice with bare hands. Always use tongs or thick gloves. Dry ice is extremely cold at minus 109 degrees F and can cause frostbite instantly.
Never seal dry ice in an airtight container. It releases carbon dioxide gas as it sublimates and can cause pressure buildup.
Never swallow dry ice. Always use a dry ice strainer placed over the top of the glass so the dry ice cannot be consumed. The strainer I use is linked in the equipment section above. This is non-negotiable.
Use only a very small piece. A piece the size of a grape creates plenty of dramatic fog effect. More is not better.
The fog effect lasts 3 to 5 minutes. After the dry ice has fully sublimated the cocktail is completely safe to drink normally.
Dry ice is available at many grocery stores and party supply stores. Call ahead to check availability.
MOCKTAIL VERSION
This mocktail is just as beautiful and just as delicious. Make it alongside the cocktail so everyone can be included.

1 cup fresh blackberries Large handful fresh mint 2 oz fresh lemon juice 1 oz simple syrup or honey Splash of white grape juice for body Sparkling water to fill Same rim garnish and dry ice effect
Muddle blackberries and mint. Add lemon juice, simple syrup, and white grape juice. Shake with ice. Double strain into your rimmed skull glass. Top with sparkling water. Garnish exactly the same way. Add dry ice if using. Serve immediately.
TIPS FOR THE BEST HALLOWEEN BLACKBERRY SMASH
Muddle the blackberries completely. Every single berry should be fully broken down before you add anything else. Under-muddled blackberries mean less color and less flavor in your final cocktail.
Double strain every single time. This is what gives you that silky smooth deep purple color without any seeds or pulp floating in your drink.
Taste before adding simple syrup. St. Germain is naturally sweet. Depending on your blackberries you may need very little additional sweetener or none at all. Taste the muddled mixture before adding.
Fresh lemon juice only. This is a cocktail where the freshness of the lemon juice is immediately apparent. Bottled lemon juice will flatten the flavor significantly.
Film the dry ice moment. Set up your phone on a tripod before you add the dry ice. You want the camera rolling the moment that fog starts billowing over the rim. This is the shot that goes viral.
Serve immediately. This cocktail is at its most beautiful and most flavorful the moment it is made. The dry ice effect only lasts 3 to 5 minutes.
Make the mocktail too. Always film both versions side by side. Your audience includes non-drinkers and they deserve to be included in the fun.
FAQ
Many grocery stores carry it especially around Halloween. Whole Foods, Walmart, and some party supply stores typically have it. Call ahead to check. It is usually sold by the pound near the checkout area or in a freezer section.
Yes when handled correctly. Never touch it with bare hands, never consume it directly, always use a strainer to keep it out of the drink, and only use food grade dry ice. The dry ice strainer linked in the equipment section above is what I use and it works perfectly.
Yes. Thaw them completely first and use them the same way. The color may actually be slightly more intense with frozen blackberries as they release their juice more easily.
Yes. Swap the 818 Tequila Reposado for vodka for a cleaner flavor or for more gin for a more botanical result. The blackberry and St. Germain combination works beautifully with multiple spirits.
Yes. Muddle the blackberries and mint in a large pitcher. Add all the spirits and lemon juice and stir well. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Strain individual portions over ice when serving. Add dry ice to individual glasses at the table for the dramatic effect.
St. Germain is a French elderflower liqueur made from fresh elderflower blossoms. It has a delicate floral flavor with hints of pear, lychee, and tropical fruit. It is one of the most versatile and beautiful liqueurs available and pairs incredibly well with berries and citrus. Find it at any well stocked liquor store.
Fresh blackberries contain natural pigments called anthocyanins which create that deep purple almost black color when muddled. The longer and more thoroughly you muddle the more intense the color becomes. No artificial coloring needed anywhere in this recipe.
Approximately 3 to 5 minutes depending on the size of the piece and the temperature of the cocktail. After the dry ice fully sublimated the cocktail is completely safe to drink normally through your straw.
Yes with adult supervision. The same safety rules apply. Use the strainer, never let kids touch the dry ice, and make sure the dry ice has fully sublimated before they drink from the glass. The mocktail version is just as dramatic and fun for kids.
