Spooky Paloma Halloween Cocktail (Natural Color, No Food Coloring)
I set this down on the counter, and everyone stopped talking.

That deep blood red color. The Tajín rim. Black spiders crawling across a fresh grapefruit slice. A skeleton hand rising out of the glass. Fresh rosemary standing tall. All of it against a dark, moody background that looks like something out of a haunted speakeasy.
And then people tasted it and forgot about how it looked because it is that good.
This Spooky Paloma is a Halloween twist on one of my all time favorite cocktails. A classic Paloma is already one of the most refreshing tequila cocktails you can make. Fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, honey, and a Tajin rim. It is bright and citrusy and a little salty and absolutely perfect.
For the Halloween version I added pomegranate juice. That is it. That one addition transforms the pale pink of a classic Paloma into a deep blood red that looks dramatic and spooky and completely intentional. And the pomegranate adds a beautiful tartness that makes the whole cocktail taste more complex and interesting.
Zero food coloring anywhere in this recipe. Every color you see in that glass is completely natural. The red comes from pomegranate. The grapefruit adds the pink. The Tajin rim adds the dark spice edge. All of it real. All of it delicious.
Make this for your Halloween party. Make it for yourself on a Friday night in October. Make the mocktail version for your kids so everyone gets to feel fancy with a spooky drink in their hand.
This one is going to be your most requested cocktail of the season.
WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS

INGREDIENTS
The Cocktail: 4 oz 818 Tequila Reposado 4 oz fresh grapefruit juice (about 1 large grapefruit) 1 oz fresh lime juice 1 tbsp honey 2 oz pomegranate juice Ice Sparkling water or club soda to top
The Rim: Lime wedge for rimming Tajin for the rim
The Garnish: Fresh grapefruit slice or wheel Fresh rosemary sprig Pomegranate seeds Plastic Halloween spiders Skeleton hand stirrer or pick
Mocktail Version: 4 oz fresh grapefruit juice 1 oz fresh lime juice 1 tbsp honey 2 oz pomegranate juice Sparkling water to fill Same rim and garnish
A note on the tequila: I use 818 Tequila Reposado. The reposado designation means it has been aged in oak barrels which gives it a slightly richer more complex flavor than a blanco tequila. That depth pairs beautifully with the tart grapefruit and sweet pomegranate. If you only have blanco tequila it works great too.
A note on the grapefruit juice: Fresh only. This is non-negotiable. Bottled grapefruit juice has a completely different flavor profile and will make your cocktail taste flat and artificial. Squeeze it fresh right before making the cocktail. One large grapefruit gives you about 4 oz of juice.
A note on the honey: Honey adds a more complex natural sweetness than simple syrup. If your honey is very thick warm it slightly before adding so it dissolves easily into the cold cocktail.
A note on the Tajin rim: Tajin is a Mexican chili lime seasoning that pairs perfectly with grapefruit. The combination of chili heat and citric acid against the sweet tart cocktail is one of the most satisfying flavor contrasts you will ever taste. Find it at any grocery store in the Latin foods aisle or at H Mart.
HOW TO MAKE THE SPOOKY PALOMA
Step 1 — Rim your glass with Tajin Run a lime wedge slowly around the entire rim of your stemless margarita coupe glass. Dip the rim into Tajin rotating until fully coated. The dark red spice against the glass is your first stunning visual. Set aside.
Step 2 — Fill your glass with ice Add fresh ice to your rimmed glass before mixing the cocktail. This keeps everything cold and gives you something to strain over immediately.
Step 3 — Mix the cocktail In a cocktail shaker combine 818 Tequila Reposado, fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, honey, and pomegranate juice. Fill with ice. Shake vigorously for 15 full seconds. The pomegranate juice creates that deep blood red color as everything combines in the shaker.
Step 4 — Strain and pour Strain the cocktail over the fresh ice in your rimmed glass. Watch the colors swirl together as you pour. That moment of the red liquid hitting the ice and the colors mixing is one of your best filming moments.
Step 5 — Top with sparkling water Add a small splash of sparkling water or club soda to the top of the cocktail. This lightens the texture slightly and adds a gentle fizz that makes the drink feel more refreshing.
Step 6 — Garnish and serve Add a fresh grapefruit slice to the rim. Tuck a fresh rosemary sprig alongside it. Scatter pomegranate seeds on top. Place black Halloween spiders strategically on the grapefruit slice and rim. Add a skeleton hand stirrer rising out of the drink. Serve immediately and film everything before anyone takes a sip.
Mocktail version: Combine fresh grapefruit juice, lime juice, honey, and pomegranate juice in your rimmed glass over ice. Top with sparkling water. Same garnish. Just as beautiful and completely alcohol free.

TIPS FOR THE BEST SPOOKY PALOMA
Always use fresh grapefruit juice. Squeeze it right before making the cocktail. Fresh grapefruit juice has a brightness that no bottled version can replicate.
Shake vigorously for the full 15 seconds. This chills the cocktail completely and slightly dilutes it to the perfect drinking strength.
Warm your honey slightly if it is very thick. Cold thick honey will not dissolve properly into the cocktail. A few seconds in the microwave makes it liquid and easy to mix.
Film the pour shot. The moment the deep red cocktail hits the ice and the colors swirl together is one of the most satisfying cocktail filming moments you will have. Set up your camera before you pour.
Tajin rim is non-negotiable. The chili lime salt against the sweet tart grapefruit pomegranate cocktail is one of the best flavor contrasts in any cocktail. Do not swap it for regular salt.
Make the mocktail version too. Always film both versions side by side. Your audience includes non-drinkers and they deserve a beautiful spooky Halloween drink just as much as everyone else.
Serve immediately. This cocktail is most beautiful and most cold the moment it is made.
VARIATIONS
Make it spicier. Add a few slices of fresh jalapeño to the shaker before shaking. The jalapeño adds a gentle heat that builds slowly and pairs incredibly well with the grapefruit.
Use mezcal instead of tequila. Mezcal has a smoky depth that adds a completely different but equally incredible dimension to this cocktail. Very Halloween-appropriate.
Make it a big batch for a party. Combine all ingredients except the sparkling water in a large pitcher. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Rim individual glasses with Tajín and pour over ice. Top each glass with sparkling water individually. Garnish right before serving.

Add a splash of Cointreau or Triple Sec. A half ounce of orange liqueur adds a subtle sweetness and complexity that takes this cocktail to another level.
FAQ
The deep red color comes from two natural sources. Pomegranate juice provides the deep dark red pigment and fresh grapefruit juice provides the bright pink. Together they create that blood red Halloween color that looks completely artificial but is entirely natural.
Yes. Blanco tequila gives you a cleaner more neutral spirit flavor that lets the grapefruit and pomegranate shine even more. Reposado adds a slightly richer oak aged depth. Both work beautifully in this cocktail.
I strongly recommend against it. Fresh grapefruit juice has a brightness and complexity that bottled juice cannot replicate. The difference is immediately apparent in this cocktail where grapefruit is the primary flavor. Squeeze it fresh every time.
Tajin is a Mexican seasoning made from chili peppers, lime, and salt. It has a bright tangy mildly spicy flavor that pairs perfectly with citrus cocktails. Find it in the Latin foods aisle at most grocery stores, at H Mart, or order it online.
You can but you will lose the dramatic red color and some of the flavor complexity. If you cannot find pomegranate juice, cranberry juice is the closest substitute for both color and tartness.
Yes. Mix everything except the sparkling water in a large pitcher and refrigerate up to 4 hours ahead. Rim glasses with Tajin right before serving. Pour over ice and top with sparkling water individually. Garnish right before serving.
It leans tart with a subtle sweetness from the honey. The Tajin rim adds a salty spicy contrast that balances everything beautifully. If you prefer it sweeter add an extra tablespoon of honey.
This recipe makes 2 cocktails, each with approximately 2 oz of tequila. It is a moderately strong cocktail. Always drink responsibly.
CLOSING
This Spooky Paloma stopped everyone in the room the moment I set it down. That deep blood red color, the Tajin rim, the black spiders, the skeleton hand- all of it completely natural and completely stunning.
But what keeps people coming back for a second is how good it actually tastes. Fresh grapefruit, pomegranate, honey, and 818 Tequila Reposado is one of the best flavor combinations I have put in a glass.

Make this for your Halloween party. Make a mocktail version for everyone who doesn’t drink. Set them both out side by side and watch the reactions.
